camping tentSeeing this emergency alert radio online today with seven different bands for weather alerts or other public emergencies brought back a memory of a time we were camping and could certainly have used this device for our own safety. We were on a four day canoe trip, and as we were setting up our camping tent and getting the evening fire started to cook our meal when the skies opened and the rain just poured down. We skipped dinner and crawled into our camping tent, but the worst was waiting for us that we really could have used this emergency radio for.

Later that night, we all woke up to the loudest clap of thunder we had ever heard and bright white lightening. We all bounced off our ground pads, not of our own doing. Lightening had struck a tall pine tree not 10 feet from our camping tent and shredded the tree. Thank goodness it was raining hard, or we would have had a fire emergency, too. The next day we awoke to a gorgeous day, and finished our trip under deep blue skies and sleeping comfortably at night in our camping tent. When we got back to town, they told us a tornado had ripped through the area we were canoeing through, and had we had the weather alert radio, we would have known exactly what was happening and could have gone back to town to tell our family that we were OK, and continued with the canoe trip.
